3. News In response to the vote in Scotland for Independence, Catalonia has pushed for its independence from Spain. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, wants to succeed from Madrid, the capital of Spain. Spain has pushed to keep Catalonia as a province by legally mandating against voting. Post office has stated it will refuse to transport ballots. Voting will have to take place for all Spanish voters and Spain will not allow a national vote for Catalonian independence.

4. News Cont. Catalonia has been part of Spain since Spanish conquest in 1714. This is not the first attempt at independence in Spain Talks have been igniting excitement for years. One other province in Spain has tried for and still seeks independence as well. Many people want to succeed to lose the decline in economic strength that Spain has endured in recent years. Unemployment rate nears 25%.

5. News Cont. Catalonia has its own spoken language – Catalan. Mix between Spanish, French and Italian with a closer resemblance to the latter. After the civil war of 1936-1939, Catalan was banned in public places. Soon after, in protest, Catalan became the official language for all schools and government positions. Catalonians do not necessarily want to be independent they simply call for recognition and change.
