Proposition for a diving boat at the CERN Scuba Club Guy, Denis, Mike
2
Why a Club Dive Boat? Open up many options for diving in our local region Surface security for delicate and difficult dives – e.g. Chindrieux, Hirondelle Access to various interesting dive sites – Lac Bourget, Lac Annecy, Lac Voglans – Try some new dive sites, away from Hermance! Dive school training – P1 first boat diving experience – P2, P3 school exercises – Possible Hermance shuttle
3
What local diving did we do in 2014? Statistics taken from club records, since 23/7/2014 until 2/11/2014 (private dives not counted). Hermance: 29 sorties club – P2 + P3 schools on same evening counted as 1 sortie – Average number of participants: 6 – Peak number of participants: 13 Lac Bourget: 2 sorties club – 1 Chindrieux and 1 Pierre a Bise – Average number of participants: 10 Dives for Nitrox training: 4 – Average number of participants: 13

Type of boat and budget RIB (semi-rigid), well adapted for diving, light to transport by trailer Length 6.5m, Width 2.5m max, Weight < 750kg Authorised capacity 12 persons, or 8 equipped divers Outboard motor power ~100cv On trailer for transport Equipped for diving, tank rack, ladder, safety gear Budget for a quality second hand boat: Euro 15,000
10
Parking/Storage, Transport & registration Parking space available at the Kayak club Same car park, right next to our club Safe storage of valuable equipment Boat deployment mobility On trailer Ready to explore dive sites of our region No expenses for port mooring fees Ease of boat maintenance The boat stays dry and sheltered from bad weather Less work to keep boat hull clean (carenage) Trailer registration, can be on F or CH plates with own papers Boat registration in France http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/particuliers/F1601.xhtml
11
Operational expenses Boat Insurance ~300 Euro/year Estimated fuel costs for 1 days diving ~ 40 Euros Annual motor maintenace, done by a professional Periodic technical control for trailer Boat running expenses should be covered by the users, rather than being a burden on the club budget Simplest solution, calculate a reasonable annual « forfait » to be paid with club inscription, for those members wishing to participate in boat outings
12
Operational Logistics Owning and running a boat will require the motivation and good will of several members Need for members with car equipped with trailer hook Need for members with boat licence (we have many!) Require lakeside ports with easy public access and possibility to park car and trailer nearby Time overhead for a boat outing should not be under estimated. Easily taking up a full day Boat should be made available to ALL INTERESTED MEMBERS!
13
The alternatives to a club boat Some boat services exist in the region, such as Haut Savoi Plongee The cost of these services is approximately 30 Euros for a single dive, per diver. Choice of dive sites and available dates is limited and requires significant advanced planning In practice we no not make more than 2 dives of this type per year, and with limited participation (private invitation) One day boat rental in the region for a suitable dive boat costs approximately 400 Euros It is practically impossible to find a rental boat which is suitably equipped for diving
14
Impact on club funds A 15,000 Euro budget certainly a big long term investment Can only be approved by the members at the AGM The club is now in a comfortable financial position Affordable budget without unbalancing other budgets, such as money aside for a serious compressor failure Recent investments, new Nitrox compressor and in renewing good quality BCDs and cold water regulators All CERN clubs are non-profit associations Surplus funds should not exceed reasonable levels The committee is seeking ways to invest club funds in the interests of the members diving activity Money invested can be recuperated, if necessary to sell the boat at a later date
15
Finding the right second hand boat Long term investment, Important to make the right choice! Elect a « boat committee » of 4 persons, responsible for discussing the best choice of boat, and reseaching offers Draw upon the experience of other boat owners, such as the CERN sailing club Winter period is an ideal time to search for interesting second hand boat offers It would be prudent to hire the services of a boat surveyor before purchase
16
Conclusions Local club diving is currently polarised around Hermance A club dive boat would open up new diving possibilities with the significant added value of surface security Clear solutions available for storage and deployment Operational logistics should not be under estimated, but are easily manageable if members are motivated We are a large club with sufficient surplus funds to finance this project, if so desired Having a dive boat in the club will be FUN!
17
THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION! And now... Questions, Comments? Vote for approval… Provisional budget: 15,000 Euro Mandate to form a working group to make detailed study and report to the committee
