 Introduction to wind energy  History of wind energy  How it works  Usage capacity of wind energy  Wind power advantages  Wind power disadvantages  Example: Rock-port, MO  Conclusion  References

 Wind energy is a source of renewable power which comes from air current flowing across the earth's surface. Wind turbines harvest this kinetic energy and convert it into usable power which can provide electricity for home, farm, school or business applications on small (residential) - or large (utility) - scales. Wind energy currently meets a mere 1.5% of global electricity generation. But scientists foresee a lot of potential in this alternative energy source.

 People use wind energy from ancient times. There are several examples of wind energy consumption: Egyptian people used wind to operate their boats; Chinese people used wind to pump water and etc..  In 11 century, European people used wind power to produce electricity and pump water.  In 19 century, wind energy technology was brought to America  In 1930, steam engine was more popular then wind mills.  In 1970, when price of oil increased people started to pay more attention to development of wind energy.  In present time, usage of wind energy is rapidly growing.

 Wind energy is one of the fastest growing sources of electricity and one of the fastest growing markets in the world today. These growth trends can be linked to the multi- dimensional benefits associated with wind energy. According to Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan

 Wind energy doesn’t produce greenhouse gases.  Turbines are taking little space in its base. So, the land around the turbine can be used in agricultural or any other needs.  Wind energy is very helpful for people living in far locations. In addition, we can range the size and number of turbines depending on the level of population in different regions;  One of the most important advantages of wind energy is that it is free. People can save a lot of money.  The Third World countries can use wind energy because it is cheap to build turbine and it is inexpensive in its service.  Also, if we combine wind energy and solar energy, we will have constant source of energy.

Disadvantages:  The strength of wind is changeable. So we will always receive different amount of energy.  Turbines produce a lot of noise. So, people living close to theme will be always disappointed.  We need to build a lot of turbines in order to provide energy for cities with large amount of population. Counter arguments against disadvantages:  There are many places in nature were wind never stops, such as seashores, mountains and other places.  So we can place turbines far away from the cities, towns, or villages to avoid noise pollution.  It is possible to build the needed amount of turbines that can provide enough power.

Example: Rockport – a small town that 100% powered by wind energy Rock Port (Missouri) is first US community which is powered by 4 wind turbines. The population of the town is 1400 people. 13 million kilowatt are needed to supply the community, however, the 4 turbines produce 16 million kilowatt. This small town is a perfect example of efficient consumption of wind energy.

 By summarizing all above, our group understand that wind energy turbines is the best alternative for fossil fueled or nuclear powered stations. In addition, it is environmentally friendly that makes it 2 steps higher that any other source of energy.
