8 Our research activities are based on regional needs and national coordination. Research and development serves working life needs in HUMAK’s operating areas and is integrated into the learning process of our students. HUMAK’s research profiles are: Development of communities Development of youth work Cultural management, production and entrepreneurship and Development of the professional field of sign language interpretation Research and Development at HUMAK 15 9 2010

9 HUMAK’s structure is a network of 9 campuses and total number of students is about 1,500 NGO and Youth Work in Joensuu, Nurmijärvi, Tornio, Äänekoski Cultural production in Jyväskylä, Kauniainen, Lappeenranta, Turku Sign Language Interpretation in Helsinki, Kuopio The number of personnel is approximately 150, supported by numerous part-time instructors Rector’s Office is located in Helsinki HUMAK participates major European Exchange Programmes student and teacher exchange with foreign partners is active HUMAK in Figures 15 9 2010

10 Student and teacher exchange with foreign partner universities: annually about 50 HUMAK students spend a term abroad through the Erasmus and Nordplus student exchange programmes. 11 For example, students can participate in multicultural activities work with foreign exchange students take part in instruction given by foreign exchange teachers, take courses focusing on international issues, and participate in language instruction offered at various HUMAK campuses. 12 Studies for the UAS degree consists of o Basic and professional studies o Optional studies o Practical training o Bachelor’s thesis The extent of the studies is 210 – 270 ECTS credits, and the duration is 3,5 – 4, 5 years Most UASs are multidisciplinary, i.e part of the studies can be chosen from different fields of study International experience comes from studies an practical training abroad Practice, different projects and BA’s thesis are implemented in co-operation with the companies and corporations Close interaction with working life guarantees good job opportunities Studies in the UASs 15 9 2010

13 The UASs co-operate closely with companies and corporations an offer them e.g. Research and development services Projects and ventures Continuing education and tailor-made training Co-operation in the UASs and working life in applied r & d-work aims primarily at regional development and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises HUMAK’s national network brings it close to students and serves working life educational and r & d-needs in various regions in its fields Close co-operation with working life – the strength in UASs 15 9 2010

14 Graduates from UAS can build on their professional competence by continuing in Master’s programmes in UAS Professionally oriented, offer graduates already in working life an excellent opportunity to advance and expand their skills in their own specialisation area The requirements for Master's studies are: Bachelors' level UAS degree, at least three years of work experience The MA Degrees are 60-90 ECTS, study time is 1,5-2 years UAS Master is equivalent to a University MA Degree in the labour market Each student has a personal study plan, which facilitates student guidance and the monitoring of study progress The programme structure in Master studies is often arranged in intensive study periods and, therefore, is part-time Professional Master’s degrees 15 9 2010

15 Nurmijärvi campus - the biggest campus of HUMAK - at the moment about 220 students - 16 teachers (senior lecturers) - wide range of partners in working life: municipalities, organizations (including labor unions, youth organizations etc.), corporations

16 Degree Programme - Bachelor’s Degree in Civic Activities and Youth Work - study time 3,5 years – extension 210 ECTS - the degree programme includes studies in civic activity, participation, preventive work and youth work - studies include both theoretical and practical themes - the first practical training takes place during the first spring semester

17 Degree Programme During the second year of studies student chooses one of these professional orientation themes: developing of organizations and voluntary work, practical developing of social strengthening (empowerment) developing of international and intercultural activity Both developing project (20 ECTS) and bachelor thesis (15 ECTS) are supposed to do during the third and fourth year of studies.
