Project Overview II The Zooming Out for a Global View Conference is… “a student global issues conference for high school students”… but it is much more than that An opportunity to learn about sustainability issues affecting local and global communities A chance to interact with high school students and Texas A&M students/faculty A way to give back to society through education

Zooming Out for a Global View 2012 Global Issues Conference for High School Students Sponsored by Public Partnership & Outreach, Office of the Provost, the College of Geosciences, and the Academy for Future International Leaders at Texas A&M University Date: Thursday, May 3, 2012 Time: 9 am - 3 pm, includes lunch Fee: No charge for students and teachers Location: Rudder Theater Complex, on the campus of Texas A&M University Environmental Sustainability Issues: Energy Use Genetically Modified Organisms Resource Depletion Clean Water Sustainable Agriculture Economic Sustainability Issues: Black Economy (smuggling) Consumerism Consuming vs. Saving Debt Crisis Poverty Fair Trade Societal Sustainability Issues: Disaster Aid Globalization Political Protests Territory Disputes Bullying Health Care Education Projects involve: Basic understanding of sustainability as a concept: interconnectedness, systems, sustainability Local investigation of an environmental, economic, or societal issue Making the connection: How does the local issue impact our world? Writing: Abstract & research paper focusing on a local issue and connecting it to a global perspective Multi-media presentation: Linking a local problem to global impact Poster: Illustrates key concepts of the project. Used to discuss project with faculty and students Projects teach: Engage students in a real life learning experience Writing skills: how to clearly present a problem and make a connection between the local problem and how it impacts our world in global proportions.
