Strengthening Critical Areas: Using standard units of measure Unit of Study 14: Applying standard units of measure Global Concept Guide: 1 of 1

Content Development The learning activities included in the lesson ideas were selected as culminating tasks for linear measurement. Instructional decisions should be made based on student data and need. The classroom teacher can determine if tasks combining multiple measurement standards, as provided, are most appropriate or if it would be more appropriate to select activities to re-teach specific standards as determined by analyzing previous student assessments. Specific tasks for a variety of measurement standards are on the re-teach slide.

Day 1 Essential Question: How does using a different tool change my measurement Sample Engage: A student measured the length of a desk in both feet and inches. She found that the desk was 3 feet long. She also found out that it was 36 inches long. How can the same object have two different measurements? Lesson Ideas Use the lesson idea "Footsteps on the Rug” to reinforce the concept, the smaller the unit, the more iterations needed to cover a given length."Footsteps on the Rug” Are they the Same Length This lesson uses a discovery approach to exploring the meaning of measurement using two different units. Are they the Same Length Will Tommy or Dad have more footsteps on the rug? How do you know? Student Response I know Dad’s foot is bigger so he will have fewer steps to cover the same length that Tommy walked. So Tommy will have more foot steps. Or The longer the unit the fewer I need. By the end of Day 1, students will understand the smaller the unit the more they need. Feet and InchesFeet and Inches Students measure the length of a line twice and are given an opportunity to explain why the line measures in fewer feet than inches.

Day 2 Essential Question: How can you estimate a measurement or value? The focus of this day is on making reasonable estimates. Lesson Ideas: Can I make a Reasonable Guess? This lesson uses a discovery approach to estimate the length of objects using inches, feet, meters, and centimeters. Can I make a Reasonable Guess? Measurement Mania- This lesson provides students with a hands-on opportunity to estimate and measure real-world objects. The students will be using various units of measure. Measurement Mania Measuring Madness- This lesson consists of a fun, inquiry-based activity that guides children to understand how to estimate lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters! Measuring Madness By the end of Day 2, students will be able to make reasonable estimates when measuring in inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters.

Day 3/4 Essential Question: Why is it important for us to know how to measure different objects using different tools of measurement? In the task “Giant Measurements” students utilize a variety of tools to measure and build a “giant” from butcher paper. When groups compare giants, students will determine how much longer one object is than another. Measurement Tasks- Select tasks that are appropriate for your students based on informal and formal data. Measurement Tasks By the end of Day 4, students should be able to make accurate measurements with efficient tools.

Enrich/Reteach/Intervention Reteach A common misconception students may still have about measurement relates to the ruler. Students often think the numbers on the ruler are counting the hash marks not the space between the marks. Teachers can provide students with a ruler with hash marks and no numbers. Ask students to measure something shorter than the ruler. Facilitate discussion about the number of spaces and relate that to a traditional ruler.
