2 Personal Life Born February 25,1841 The son of a tailor and a seamstress Sought out commissions for portraits and depended on kindness of his friends, mentors, and patrons Studied works of Raphael, Velazquez, and Rubens to develop a more traditional style on a trip to Italy in 1881 Was the leader of Impressionism

3 Artistic Style He used techniques such as use of bright colors, light-hearted subjects, and bold lines Developed new techniques that defined movement; portrayed with sincere compositions and vivid colors He is known for his pleasant paintings a love of the female figure His subjects shifted from contemporary themes to more timeless themes ; particularly nude figures
