WARM UP: You travel at 25 miles per hour. How far do you go afterβ¦
1.5 hours hours hours Given the following numbers: Order from LEAST to GREATEST Label each number as WHOLE, INTEGER, or RATIONAL ππ.π πππππ ππ πππππ ππ.ππππππ 1 4 , β0.5, 0.2, β2 β7, 4 7 , 1.2, β2.8 β7, β2.8, 4 7 , 1.2 β2, β0.5, 0.2, 1 4 I R R R I R R R

2.2 and 2.3: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS Example 1: 1. 7+(β2)
STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS: Change all βdouble signsβ into one sign. -different signs changes to subtraction -same signs changes to addition 2. Signs of both numbers are: -different signs, then SUBTRACT and give the sign of the larger number -same signs, then ADD and keep the same sign *NOTE: signs are always attached to the number to the right Example 1: 1. 7+(β2) 2. 8+(β11) 3. β1+(β4) 4. 18β(β7) 5. β5β β6 6. β12β(β4) =7β2 =π =8β11 =βπ =β1β4 =βπ =18+7 =ππ =β5+6 =π =β12+4 =βπ

2.2 and 2.3: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS Example 2:
STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS: Change all βdouble signsβ into one sign. -different signs changes to subtraction -same signs changes to addition 2. Signs of both numbers are: -different signs, then SUBTRACT and give the sign of the larger number -same signs, then ADD and keep the same sign *NOTE: signs are always attached to the number to the right Example 2: Temperature change 1. 2.1 and 2.3: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS Example 3:
STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS: Fractions need a COMMON DENOMINATOR to be added or subtracted!!! Change all mixed fractions to improper fractions. Create a common denominator. Follow same steps of adding and subtracting integers. Example 3: 1. β β 1 7 3. β =β 4 7 β 1 7 = β4β1 7 =β π π = = 2+2 6 = 4 6 = π π =β =β β4+6 15 = π ππ

2.1 and 2.3: ADDING AND SUBTRACTING WITH VARIABLES
Example 4: Adding and Subtracting more than 2 integers 1. β3+ β2 β6 =β3β2β6 =β5β6 =βππ 2. 15β β2 β20 =15+2β20 =17β20 =βπ Example 5: Adding and Subtracting more than 2 integers with variables 1. β1+ β π₯ π₯ 2 β2 =β1β π₯ 2 +4 π₯ 2 β2 = β1β2 +(β π₯ 2 +4 π₯ 2 ) =βπ+π π π 2. πβ β6 π 3 +2π+(β5 π 3 ) =π+6 π 3 +2πβ5 π 3 = π+2π +(6 π 3 β5 π 3 ) =ππ+ π π
