Mumbai and Salford – what are the potential impacts of future change? Objective: To be able to explain the potential impacts of future change in Salford and Mumbai.

All of you will be able to identify potential positive and negative impacts of future change in Salford and Mumbai. Most of you will be able to explain the potential positive and negative impacts of future change – are they economic, social, political or environmental? Some of you will be able to evaluate the potential impacts of future change on Salford and Mumbai.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? Proposals involve the transformation of a half-square kilometre site with a 30-storey skyscraper, more than 1,000 flats, and hundreds of offices. Crime levels might rise, especially if linked to alcohol. Purpose built space for creative and digital businesses. Most of the new district will be pedestrianised. New mini-city in Salford Quays could create 15 000 new jobs. Will be built to the east of MediaCity. Major contributor to the economy of the whole region through the multiplier effect. MediaCity created only 18 jobs for local Salford people – most jobs went to people from outside the city.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? Development of transport to reduce the reliance on cars – car parks to be concealed. The masterplan will be considered by planners later this year – will be built in four phases over the next 30 years. The plan is to raise the profile of Salford - creating job opportunities for local residents. Publicly accessible waterfront for recreational use (walking and cycling). Plan includes an iconic new civic square – roughly the same size at Manchester’s Cathedral Gardens – it will be one of the most significant and well-known public spaces in Greater Manchester. Dockyards closed in 1982 causing high levels of unemployment. Large parts of the development will have no life in the day.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? A vibrant and sustainable environment to invest, live, work, study and visit – a mix of uses. Existing businesses will move to the new mini-city from elsewhere in Salford and Manchester. Many local people aren’t qualified to work in the tertiary industries being targeted by the planned mini-city. Low cost space for small businesses. Salford town hall will not be moved to the new mini-city. No guarantees about how many jobs will go to local people. Empty, soul-less apartment blocks already exist on the Quays. There are enough tram stops in the area already – more stops will slow down the service even more.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? Infrastructure improvements to provide links with other economic activity – e.g. new footbridge to the rest of Salford Quays (Lowry, War Museum, Outlet Mall). Will provide a jobs lifeline to local people in one of Britain’s most deprived communities. Will develop a sustainable urban neighbourhood, building on the success of MediaCity and furthering the council’s vision of creating a new town centre (CBD) at Salford Quays. Vast majority of job applicants will be disappointed. Regenerating a derelict part of the Manchester Ship Canal waterfront. There would be new shops, restaurants, a hotel and four multi-storey car parks. An improved environment – a new piazza and park with events space able to hold 4000 people.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? Improved public transport links e.g. new Metrolink extension to the heart of Manchester – more tram stops will be built to serve it. Many of the plans might never happen e.g. water taxis. Improved cycle ways and footpaths. River boats and river taxis with links to Manchester CBD, Salford Quays and the Trafford Centre. Will be built on swathes of former docklands. University of Salford opening new campus for 1500 students and staff – new courses to provide skills to help access job opportunities on site. Sustainable developments – wind turbines & solar panels on high level rooftops.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? BBC will also attract other media companies to the area. Certain groups are not being catered for – e.g. facilities for the elderly. Will create 10 000 jobs and add £1billion to the regional economy over 5 years. A day or night leisure destination – restaurants, shops and bars. Much of the accommodation isn’t affordable to local people. Buildings with a minimal impact on non-renewable resources. A range of job opportunities from cameraman to construction, receptionist to retail.

Statement Fact/+/- Economic etc ? BBC to create 100 apprenticeships for local people with no media experience. Other parts of the city are becoming derelict and run down (e.g. Granada studios). Tree planting encouraged to support biodiversity, offset carbon emissions and enhance the appearance of the area. Close to stunning countryside. Development will create a network of enhanced green spaces and routes. The local road network is being expanded.
