What you should have learned Ethiopia Ethiopia has 2 major religions— Christianity and Islam. At times Christians and Muslims have fought each other, but today they live together peacefully. Most Ethiopians live in rural areas. Their daily lives are very different from those of Ethiopians in urban areas.

What you should have learned Tanzania After independence, Tanzania’s President Julius Nyrere established Swahili as the country’s language, created a one-party political system, and encouraged farmers to live in ujamaa (work as family) villages.

Tanzania cont. Since Nyerere retired in 1985, Tanzania’s government has encouraged privatization and other economic reforms as well as a multiparty political system.

What you should have learned Kenya Kenyans come from 40 ethnic groups that are distinct but also share some values and characteristics. Most Kenyans are farmers. Most Kenyan farmers are women. To help solve community problems, many Kenyan women have formed various self-help groups--harambees

Kenya cont Many Kenyan men have had to move to the city to find work and send money home. But they often return to their villages on weekends or when they retire.

Key Terms Lingua franca—is a language used for communication among people who speak different first languages. Legal language of country—business, papers, laws The USA’s language is English. Privatization---is the sale of government- owned industries to private companies. People own the business, not the government.

Key Terms Multipary System---when a country has 2 or more political parties. The USA has a multiparty system. Kikuyu---Kenya’s largest ethnic group Maasai—another ethnic group who makes a living by farming and herding cattle. They wear red.

Key Terms Seminomadic---sometimes people live in villages and sometimes people will follow the herds. Harambee---Swahili word that means ‘let’s pull together.’ group problem solving

Tanzania When it became independent, they had a strong president Julius Nyerere. He made many laws concerning how the many ethnic groups of Tanzania should live. 1 common language Working together to get out of poverty and improve farming by living collectively together. Some laws worked, some did not.

Kenya A shamba is a family farm. Most Kenyan’s refer to it as where they are from and live. Like most Subsaharan Africans, many men will go to cities for work and pay and women and children will stay on the shambas. People in the cities will live together in similar ethnic neighborhoods.
