Methods of Exploration
2
Methods of Mineral Exploration The most common methods of mineral exploration are: Aerial methods – magnetic, gravity and electromagnetic surveys. On-site methods – seismic and geochemical surveys. Satellite images.

AERIAL METHODS
4
Magnetic Surveys Disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field are record by a magnetometer. Data is processed by computer software to construct a coloured map.
5
Gravity Surveys Small differences in the Earth’s gravitational pull are detected by gravimeters. Dense rocks and minerals can create micro- variations in the gravitational pull of the Earth. Colour coded maps are created.
6
Electromagnetic Surveys Detect ore bodies that are good electrical conductors. A magnetic field is sent from a transmitter – this field creates tiny electrical currents in minerals in the Earth. These currents create their own magnetic fields that are detected by a receiver.

ON-SITE METHODS
8
Seismic Surveys A shock wave is sent into the ground and the reflected sound waves are recorded. Different rock layers reflect the waves in different ways and a 3D picture can be created.

Geochemical Surveys Complete your homework then add this information here!
