Is this real, a function of reporting, or increased patient volume? Are the rates of suicide attempts and completion higher than expected? How can we do better?

4 Suicide prevention intervention What is the expected suicide rate in this population? 10-12/100,000 IN = U.S. OVERALL Lifetime risk in Psychiatry patients is 6-12X higher 3.5%-7% in major psych disorders--> Rate of 75-100/100,000 per year Extrapolation with UIC’s 7550 unique patients--> predict 6-8 suicides and 20-40 attempts

5 Project Aims: Educate teachers about depressive symptoms and suicide risk Encourage community activism among UIC residents Create a bridge between Department of Psychiatry and community School Intervention For Depressed Latino Youth: A Model of Community Education

11 Patient Safety The JCAHO Patient Safety Standard requires proactive identification of patient safety risks Safety Committee is implementing JCAHO 2003 National patient safety recommendations Sentinel event process has been expanded to include root cause analysis of near misses Employee Safety Survey is now online UHC online occurrence reporting system piloted New employee orientation includes Safety

12 NetLearning Computer based learning makes basic training & tracking more efficient 20 JCAHO modules + online library Used to track completion of confidentiality agreements & performance evaluations Expanding use to residents & physicians for easy completion of mandatory requirements

13 HIPAA: Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act Privacy Rule: protect individually identifiable health information Security Rule: confidential transmission & storage of health care information Transactions Standards Rule: aimed at reducing administrative costs; requires use of standardized, electronic transmission of administrative & financial data.

14 HIPAA continued Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act Entire workforce must have basic training by April 13, 2003 Late February, the Medical Center is launching job specific training via NetLearning The Medical Center has offered support to other University entities to meet requirements HIPAA Channel website & newsletter established to provide on-going information
