Therapy for Children with Disabilities Recommended for children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, heart and lung conditions, birth defects, and muscle diseases. Treatment includes: fine motor development, gross motor development, muscle treatments, and exercise.

Example: Down Syndrome A chromosomal condition Patients have a mental and physical delay or disconnect Patients have: Excessive joint flexibility Poor muscle tome Instability of the altano-axial joint High risk of spinal cord injury Attend a weekly physical therapy session

Example: Microcephaly Neurodevelopmental disorder The individual’s head is significantly smaller compared to the average size for their age Patients have a lack of physical development Enables them from walk properly Limits use of extremities Mental process disruption

Disability Rates Disability rates are increasing: Any Developmental Disability: 13.87% Learning disability: 7.66% ADHD 6.69% Developmental disability rates are increasing, and are the highest

Conclusion People who are mentally disabled need physical therapy to aid them in living a “normal” life. Disorders such as Down Syndrome and microcephaly are prime examples of need for physical therapists in the field, helping people with mental or physical disorders.
