Residency Selection What every applicant needs to know brought to you by: Dr. Gael J. Lonergan Department of Radiology/USUHS

GME Board President (2 star flag officer)

Triservice GME Selection Board All applicants are graded by the Air Force, Army, and Navy panels (3 grades) –the program directors from each service comprise the service panel 3 grades (1 from each service panel) are added for a composite score Composite score and application given to Specialty Board President (2 star officer) –Specialty Board President awards bonus points (more about these later)

Once grading completed... Applications separated into the 3 services and given to the appropriate service panel The individual service panels pick their top candidates

Grading-Standard Points Grades given for the following (point scale follows, in parentheses): –MS1 and MS2 years (USMLE part 1) (2 point) –MS3 and MS4 years (USMLE part 2) (3 point) –PGY 1 evaluations (5 point) –Post-internship utilization (field) tour (5 point) –Potential for successful career officer (5 point)

–Residency (5 point) - only scored for fellowship applications (not for a 2nd residency) currently in residency: maximum 3 points completed residency and currently practicing in specialty: maximum 5 points

Grading-Bonus Points Research (maximum 4 points): 4=multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals 3=single publication in peer-reviewed journal 2=multiple publications in in-house journals, or posters 1=single publication in-house or poster Prior military service (before medical school) –max 2 points (2=medical, 1=non-medical)

The Ideal Applicant Top quarter of medical school class in grades & USMLE scores Prior military service Research activity Excellent evaluations during internship Post-internship utilization tour(s)

Radiology Residency Selection Air Force & Army: may apply as MS4 as “preselect” for PGY2 year in radiology (will do PGY1 year at same hospital - IF AVAILABLE, although may do PGY1 at different hospital than residency) Navy: no preselects (apply as PGY1 or higher only)

Residency Training: the “typical” path to Radiology Navy: complete PGY1 year, do GMO/FS tour, then residency Air Force: may go directly from PGY1 to residency or do GMO/flight surgeon tour, then residency (depends on applicant and applicant field) – PGY1 & residency at same hospital for preselects (may mean doing a medicine or surgery PGY1 year, especially at WHMC)

Army: complete PGY1 year & apply to Radiology Resdiency Selection Board during PGY1 year – most applicants go straight to residency from PGY1, sometimes at another hospital (mostly transitional PGY1)

Some tips to improve your chances for selection Max out as many scores as possible –grades, USMLE, class standing –PGY1 evals & tour OPRs –research (doesn’t have to be in radiology) Do an elective rotation at the programs to which you’ll apply –get to know the program director
