DONATING BONE MARROW

THE NEED FOR MORE DONORS According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Approximately 18,000 people need a transplant yearly. Of those in need only 30% of patient’s siblings are a bone marrow match, 70% of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant have to receive bone marrow from a donor. Columbia University Medical Center said that 70% of those needing a bone marrow transplant using donor marrow are unable to have one because a suitable bone marrow donor cannot be found. Research done by Be The Match shows that cells from younger donors lead to more successful transplants. Doctors choose registry members ages 18-44 more than 90% of the time.

BENEFIT OF BEING A DONOR Every year less than half the people in need of a bone marrow transplant actually receive one. This is due to the fact that a match was never found. By joining the registry you could become the next match and help save someone’s life.
