1 Testable Questions Learning Target: I can identify and write questions that can be tested and answered through investigations.

Write your NAME and HOUR. Complete the first section as we go through the PowerPoint.

3 Is it a testable question???
Testable questions ask about objects, organisms, and events in the natural world. For example: questions involving things like plants, animals, humans, weather patterns etc. They do NOT talk about supernatural phenomena or fictional beings.

4 Which food causes dragons to have the shiniest scales?

5 Is it a testable question???
Testable questions can be answered through investigations that involve experiments, observations, or surveys. For example: roller coaster lab, inquiry blocks, school lunch choice.

6 Which sport is better – baseball or basketball?
Circle the part that is the “problem”. Rewrite it to make it testable. Have students pair and share Which sport is better – baseball or basketball?

7 Is it a testable question???
Testable questions are answered by collecting and analyzing evidence that is measurable. For example: roller coaster lab, inquiry blocks, school lunch choice.

8 Who is the best-looking performer on this season of The Voice?
Circle the part that is the “problem”. Rewrite it to make it testable. Have students try on own and compare Who is the best-looking performer on this season of The Voice?

9 Is it a testable question???
Testable questions relate to scientific ideas rather than personal preference or moral values. For example: most watched television show, NOT favorite television show.

10 What is the best movie of all time?
Circle the part that is the “problem”. Rewrite it to make it testable. Have students come to board and try What is the best movie of all time?

11 Testable Question Worksheet
Read and complete PART 1 – prepare to discuss. Read and complete PART 2 – prepare to discuss. Next we will begin writing our own testable questions.

12 Can you write a testable question???
Think of something that you are curious about and would like to learn more about. (What do you wonder?!) Write a TESTABLE question that addresses this curiosity. It MUST meet ALL of our criteria (see next slide).

13 Testable Questions... Ask about objects, organisms, and events in the natural world. Do not relate to the supernatural or to non-measurable phenomena. Can be answered through investigations that involve experiments, observations, or surveys. Are answered by collecting and analyzing evidence that is measurable. Relate to scientific ideas rather than personal preference or moral values.

14 Pass to a Partner... Have your partner edit your question. They should write “testable” or “not testable” on your paper. If it is “not testable” you should work together to make it better.
