WHAT DOES A POLICE OFFICER DO
The primary responsibility of police officers is to protect the public, or if commissioned, the person/group/organization to which they are assigned. Through detecting and preventing crime, police officers strive to maintain law and order in their respective jurisdictions.

How much does a police officer make
As of 2011, police and highway patrol officers earned an average of $27.05 an hour and $56,260 a year. Half of all police and highway patrol officers made between $19.77 and $33.65 an hour and between $41,110 and $69,990 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Education and training
Police officer education requirements range from a high school diploma to a college degree. The minimum requirement is usually a high school diploma, although an increasing number of police departments require applicants to complete at least one or two years of college coursework or have an associate's degree.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that librarians earned an average salary of $57,020 a year as of May 2011, the equivalent of about $27.41 an hour. The median reported salary for librarians was $55,300, and the median-earning half of librarians working in the United States reported salaries ranging from $43,690 to $69,260.
