4 Using the River of News Homepage Layout

5 5 The River of News is a layout style that focuses on your recent news posts, which are displayed in a blog style news river. What is the River of News Homepage?

6 6 Each post is displayed in its own tile with headline, share links, main image and teaser text. What is the River of News Homepage?

7 7 You can use Lead Story, Featured Content, Sticky Strip and Skyboxes with the River of News layout.

8 8 Managing your River of News Homepage Your River of News homepage will have a constant stream of news posts created by your station and from the API. To set a post to appear on your homepage, check the Display in River of News checkbox under “ Story Placement” when creating the post or publishing it from the NPR API.

9 Using the Modular Homepage

10 10 The Homepage Layout Manager is a Core Publisher tool allowing stations to create and manage their Modular Homepage. What is the Homepage Layout Manager?

11 11  Users with Editor and Station Admin privilege can edit blocks, but only Station Admin have access to Layout tools  Uses drag and drop mechanism to move blocks from Bullpen to homepage regions  Uses combination of pre-existing blocks and new content blocks to create dynamic layout  Ability to preview and save multiple templates About the Homepage Layout Manager

22 22 Homepage Layout Manager: Top Content The Top Content region is located at the top of the homepage and does not expand into the right rail.

23 23 Homepage Layout Manager: Top Content You can add either Tablequeue: Featured Content or Tablequeue: Lead Stories to your Top Content region. To edit either of these blocks, go to your Edit Queues block.

24 24 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left The Content Left region is located under Top Content. It is the farthest left region of your homepage.

25 25 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left The Local News with Images block is a mini-river of all posts that you publish. Each post displays with a headline, small teaser and image (where applicable). You can add Local News with Images and/or NPR News with Images to your Content Left region.

26 26 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left The NPR News with Images block is a mini-river containing posts pulled automatically from the API throughout the day and any posts that you publish from the API. Like the NPR News with Images block, each post displays with a headline, small teaser and image (where applicable). You can add Local News with Images and/or NPR News with Images to your Content Left region.

27 27 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left You can also add the Program Promo block to your Content Left region. To edit this block, go to your Edit Queues block.

28 28 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left You can also add the Program Promo block to your Content Left region. To edit this block, go to your Edit Queues block.

29 29 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left Check the Activate the Program Promo block before adding content to ensure that it will display on your site. You will still have to drag the Program Promo block from the Bullpen to the Content Left region.

30 30 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left Begin to enter the title of the program that you want to add and select it from the autocomplete dropdown menu. This will automatically pull the program description and image from the Program Page. Check the Display check box.

31 31 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left Check the Show latest headlines box to display the three last posts tagged with the selected program. Hit the Select media button to upload a new image or logo for the program. You can hide the program image if you don’t have one for the program.

32 32 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left Similar to other tablequeues in Core Publisher, you can add more rows by changing the Queue Settings. You can also drag and drop the programs into a different order using the crossed arrows.

33 33 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Left When there is only one program in the Program Promo block the title of the block is Featured Program. However, when there are multiple programs, the title is Featured Programs and there is a “Next Program” link for people to click through all of your added programs.

34 34 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content The Middle Content region is also located under Top Content. It is the center region of your homepage.

35 35 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content Add the Announcement block to your homepage to promote an event, pledge drive or other initiative.

36 36 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content Note: None of these fields are required, so only fill in desired fields. The Title will be displayed at the title of the block. The Text is displayed as smaller, plain text.

37 37 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content If you add an image to the Announcement block, it will be automatically cropped to fit.

38 38 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content Set your Link target to a page that people can go to for more information. The Title, Image and User Action will all navigate to this link. The User Action is a call to action, like “Learn more” or “Support us today!”

39 39 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content Each Category that you have created will have a block in the Bullpen. You can add these to the Middle Content, which will display a block of the five most recent stories tagged with that Category.

40 40 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content The External RSS Block allows you to pull content from an external RSS feed into a block on your homepage.

41 41 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content Enter the Title of the block, the RSS URL that you want to use and select the number of items from the feed that you want to display using the RSS Items dropdown.

42 42 Homepage Layout Manager: Middle Content You can also add a NPR News block to the middle content section. This block will display the latest posts from the API with a title and mini teaser.

43 43 Homepage Layout Manager: Content Right Content Right refers to your right rail. You can drag and drop your ad spaces, Now Playing block, People block and other elements into the desired order in the Layout Engine admin.
