Numeracy and Maths at Crown Primary WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
2
What happens when my child moves class/stage? AT THE END OF THE YEAR At the end of the session teachers prepare notes to pass on to the receiving teacher(s) The previous and new teachers get together for an oral pass on of information All teachers share which parts of the curriculum have been taught
3
What happens when my child moves class/stage? AT THE START OF A NEW SESSION In August teachers assess their own pupils using a baseline tool Teachers look at groupings from previous session Teachers look at what has been taught last session and find gaps in teaching and learning, comparing this to the baseline assessment data
4
Now we are ready! At Crown we use the Scottish Heinemann Maths (SHM) scheme of work Focus on the teaching of strategies Practical activities Textbook pages to help assess knowledge and understanding Textbooks are numbered 1-7 but this does not correspond exactly to class stages e.g. book 1 is for P1 and P2, book 2 is for P2 and P3, book 3 is for P3 and P4, etc
5
What does a lesson look like? The class will be grouped according to their academic ability (this could change depending on maths topic) and would ideally be into 3 groups but this depends on the spread of ability in the class At the start of the lesson the teacher will begin a mental warm up and then introduce (refresh) the topic (e.g. fractions) The pupils will go into their groups to complete their task(s) rotating around the stations set up Working with the teacher Textbook / written piece of work Game to use and test skills (this could include using the computer) Practical activity to practise skills/strategy
