2. What is BYOD?
Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to technology models where students bring a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning.
Put simply, BYOD is where students quite literally bring their own device to school in order to access the internet, apps and software using a smartphone, tablet, laptop or other device.

3. Why BYOD?
Most jobs students will have in the future do not currently exist and in most cases, they’ll be technology based.
Students need to be computer literate in order to thrive in this new world. Being tech savvy will be as essential as literacy and numeracy skills.
Technology is quickly outdated and BYOD allows school to use funds more effectively rather than on constantly updating technology.

Allow students to take greater ownership of their learning and understanding.
Direct their learning in innovative and more open-ended, student-directed tasks.
Learn from others, work collaboratively and engage in problem solving tasks.

5. Research
Many authors point out that these devices are a very significant part of students’ lives (Clifford, 2012, p. 1) (Sheninger E. , 2011) (Lee, BYOT, 2012) (Sweeney, 2012) (Walling, 2012). These devices are integral to the world in which students live (and) they should be integral to their learning lives and their use will make learning part of their lives.
BYOD also “allows students access to the same devices at school and at home, it can extend learning opportunities to times and places outside of the classroom” (Horizon Project, 2013) and “allow students to work with technology with which they are already comfortable and familiar” (Horizon Project, 2013).

7. What it will look like Every model of BYOD is different.
At Ettalong PS, BYOD will be:
A trial in 2015
Available to Year 6 students only
Open to iPads (any model) or laptops (any brand).
Used to enhance the current Year 6 program
Not compulsory
Used to enhance access to technology currently available at EPS (iPad, laptops, smartboards, net, software)

8. What it’s NOT!
BYOD is:
NOT a replacement for the current Primary curriculum
NOT all tasks being completed on devices
NOT completely student directed
NOT isolated, independent and unsupervised
NOT reducing social skills and interaction
NOT replacing the focus of literacy and numeracy

9. What it IS! BYOD is: IS enhancing the current Primary curriculum
IS a marriage of traditional learning methods with new ideas, methods and technologies
IS interactive, collaborative and developing problem solving skills
IS closely monitored and evaluated
IS developing communication skills and
IS covering all Key Learning Areas including literacy and numeracy.

11. BYOD @ EPS Students are responsible for the care of their device.
However, the school will support students in securing devices during breaks.
Devices are to come to school fully charged and operational. We do not offer charging facilities.
Students agree to only view, listen to and access school appropriate content on their device.
Photos, video and recording of any individual without consent is strictly prohibited.

12. EPS
Devices are not permitted in the playground at any time. Devices will be locked away during breaks.
Devices will go to a secured designated place before school.
Consequences for breach of the policy will be determined by the principal (or member of the executive) and may include exemption from BYOD.
The school reserves the right to inspect a student’s device if there is reason to believe the student has violated the BYOD policy, school rules or engaged in misconduct using the personal device.

13. Requirements iPad / Laptop / MacBook / Mobile Device must:
Wireless Connectivity: Support n 5Ghz standard
Minimum of 5 hours battery life every day
Minimum of 16GB storage and 2GB RAM
Protective case, one that allows device to stand upright.

14. Requirements Signed BYOD policy & Student agreement.
Accept that students are responsible for device.
The school accepts no responsibility for the damage, loss, theft or content of students’ personal devices.
Principal (or executive member) has final say about the appropriateness of device usage and content in accordance to the BYOD policy and school rules.

15. When?
Each Yr 6 classroom teacher will advise in writing when BYOD will commence.
Signed and approved BYOD policy and Student agreement documents returned.
Device approved by staff member.
Device connected to school’s wifi.

16. BYOD@EPS This is a trial.
There is no guarantee of success or continuation into the future.
Program will be evaluated and extended, aligning to local high school’s BYOD programs if successful.
