These two photographs of the same location in Miami, taken in 1913 and 1997, demonstrate how dramatically urban expansion can alter the landscape, ecosystems, and the human environment over time. (Photos courtesy of Historical Museum of Southern Florida) What has changed about the land usage Miami, Florida from 1913 to 1997?

Quick Write Questions to answer: 1. How are the pictures different? 2. Why did the area change? 3. What may have happened to the populations of organism in the living area?

Objective The students will be able to utilize “My Own Biome” game in order to investigate the effects of human impacts on the populations of organisms in a biome.

How we will play…  Each player will be playing the deciduous forest and will control one human need  You will not be allowed to save (captive breed) the animals in your biome.  The game will played for 15minutes and be paused at 5 and 10 minutes into the game (use the tilde key to pause the game)  When the game is paused your group will discuss how human needs affects the plants and animals in your biome and complete data table 1.

Player Roles Each player will be in charge of fulfilling our needs.  Player 1- Build Houses (also in charge of game controls)  Player 2- Build Farms  Player 3- Build Industry and Mining  Player 4- Logging of trees

When the game is paused… The above chart appears for each player when the game is paused using the tilde key. Use the above chart to complete data chart 1.

Key Reminders Before Starting  Each player is responsible only for their specific human need  You may not captive breed or “save” your animals  When you are told to pause the game you need to stop playing and pause the game

Post-Game Class Discussion  How did your biome change during the game?  Describe how human activities have impacted the populations of organisms in your biome.  Identify 3 actions that could be implemented in your biome to improve the balance between human needs and organism populations.  In what ways do you think that the environment has been affected by human activity?

These two photographs of the same location in Miami, taken in 1913 and 1997, demonstrate how dramatically urban expansion can alter the landscape, ecosystems, and the human environment over time. (Photos courtesy of Historical Museum of Southern Florida) Now… What do you think caused the change in land usage in Miami, Florida?

Objective The students will be able to utilize “My Own Biome” game in order to investigate the effects of human impacts on the populations of organisms in a biome.

Exit Ticket- Bye, Bye, Bye  In what ways can human activity negatively affect populations of organisms living in a biome? Describe at least 3 negative impacts and their causes. Then identify at least 3 ways that humans can reduce their impact on organisms in a biome.
