7 Work opportunities for tertiary students 20 hours in any given week for students undertaking: A full-time programme of study of at least two academic years’ duration; or A full-time programme of study, culminating in a New Zealand qualification that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category; or A full-time programme of English language studies of at least six months’ duration + IELTS report of at least 5.0; or A full-time English language programme of at least 14 weeks’ duration at an education provider that: i. is a university; or ii. holds Category One status under the NZQA EER quality assurance system; or

8 …more work opportunities During the Christmas-New Year vacation for students: Studying full-time; and Enrolled in a programme of study that has a minimum duration of at least two semesters during a period of at least eight months. Full time work rights during scheduled vacations for students undertaking: A full-time programme of at least one year’s duration; where scheduled vacations are no more than one third of the programme of study duration for programmes of study offered by tertiary providers other than universities. Note: An academic year means a programme of study of a minimum of 120 credits during a period of at least eight months (minimum of two semesters)

9 Work opportunities for secondary students 20 hours in any given week and full-time during the Christmas- New Year vacation period for student who: i. is a full-time student in Years 12 or 13; and ii. has provided written permission from their school; and iii. has written parental consent. Despite (ii) and (iii) above, secondary school students aged 18 years of age or older do not require parental consent or written permission to be granted conditions allowing full-time work during the Christmas-New Year vacation period.

10 … and more work opportunities Work visa for a maximum period of 2 years for foreign students to obtain practical experience suitable to the course/qualification on successfully completing in NZ a course that: Has a minimum completion time of 3 years; or Attracts points under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC); and Where they have an offer of employment relevant to their course or qualification Extended period of a graduate job search visa from 6 to 12 months for students with a degree in a graduate area, i.e. which would attract points under SMC if they: –meet the qualification requirements that would qualify for points under Skilled Migrant Category ; and –apply no later than 3 months after the end date of their student visa for that programme of study or qualification; and –Provide evidence that they have a minimum of $4,200 in funds.

11 Student visa maintenance funds requirements and health requirements Student maintenance funds: Applicants for a SV for a course of 36 weeks or longer must show they have NZ$15,000 to maintain themselves (less prepaid living expenses) Students undertaking courses lasting less than 36 weeks must show they have at least NZ$1,250 per month of study to maintain themselves (less prepaid living expenses). Health and insurance requirements:  Foreign fee-paying students will not be required to provide a medical certificate and will only be screened for TB, which will require them to provide a chest X-ray certificate, unless there are identified risk factors.  Foreign fee-paying students (excluding PhD and New Zealand Aid Programme-supported students) must hold acceptable insurance as a condition of their student visa.
