Skeletal System: Shoulders and Arms
Learning Target #7
2
Shoulder Girdle Composed of:
Clavicle (2): articulates with the sternum and scapula Also called the “collar bone” Scapula (2): articulates with clavicle and the humerus Also called the “shoulder blades” Clavicle Scapula
3
Associated Structures of the Scapula
Acromion process: articulates with the clavicle Coracoid process: site of attachment at the top of the shoulder for muscles of the arm Glenoid cavity: socket that receives the head of the humerus Spine of the scapula: site of attachment for muscles of the arm and back
4
Associated Structures of the Scapula
Coracoid process Acromion process Spine Glenoid cavity
5
Upper Appendages Humerus (2): upper arm bone, articulates with the scapula, radius, and ulna Radius (2): lower arm bone, articulates with the humerus, ulna, and carpals Thumb side of the forearm Ulna (2): lower arm bone, articulates with the humerus, radius, and carpals Little finger side of the forearm
6
Upper Appendages Radius Humerus Ulna
7
Associated Structures
Humerus: Head of the humerus articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula Deltoid tuberosity location of attachment for the deltoid muscle
8
Associated Structures
Radius: Head of the radius articulates with the humerus Radial tuberosity location of attachment for the biceps muscle Styloid process articulates with the carpals to form the wrist Ulna: Olecranon process articulate with the humerus, forms the elbow joint Coronoid process grips the humerus from the inside of the arm
9
Associated Structures
Olecranon process Head of the radius Head of the humerus Radial tuberosity Coronoid process Deltoid tuberosity Styloid process
10
Upper Extremities Carpals: wrist, 8 bones per hand
Metacarpals: palm, 5 bones per hand, heads of these are the knuckles Phalanges: fingers, 14 bones per hand
11
Upper Extremities Distal Phalanges Middle Proximal Metacarpals Carpals
