TEEB Training Session 1: Biodiversity Loss and its Drivers ©TEEB

TEEB Training Let’s define….  Biodiversity is the variation of life forms within a given ecosystem, biome, or on the entire Earth.  Ecosystem refers to the combined physical and biological components of an environment and humans  Ecosystem services are the benefits that people obtain from ecosystems – the goods and services of nature ©UNEP/GRID-Arendal ©TEEB

TEEB Training ©TEEB © www.teebweb.org/business-and-enterprise-graphs/

TEEB Training Provisioning Goods or products produced by ecosystems Regulating Natural processes regulated by ecosystems Cultural Intangible benefits obtained from ecosystems Supporting: Functions that maintain all other services ©UNEP/GRID-Arendal ©TEEB

TEEB Training Provisioning Services: Goods produced or provided by ecosystems  Food  Freshwater  Raw materials  Genetic resources  Medicinal/other biochemical resources  Ornamental resources  Energy ©UNEP/GRID-Arendal ©TEEB

TEEB Training Regulating Services:  Air purification  Climate regulation  Global (CO2 sequestration)  Regional and local  Moderation of extreme events  Water purification and waste treatment Natural processes regulated by ecosystems  Maintenance of soil fertility  Erosion prevention  Biological control  Pollination ©TEEB

TEEB Training Cultural Services:  Recreation  Ecotourism  Spiritual and religious experiences  Inspiration for culture, art and design  Information for cognitive development Cultural and social benefits obtained from ecosystems ©UNEP/GRID-Arendal ©TEEB

TEEB Training Supporting Services:  Nutrient cycling  Primary production  Photosynthesis  Water cycling  Maintenance of biodiversity Functions that maintain all other services ©UNEP/GRID-Arendal ©TEEB

TEEB Training Ecosystem Services Approach © Raffaelli, D. & C. Frid (eds.): Ecosystem Ecology: a new synthesis. BES Ecological Reviews Series, CUP, Cambridge ©TEEB

TEEB Training A Framework for Understanding – The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA)  Shows the importance of ecosystem services for human well-being and business development.  The Assessment was a four-year international audit of ecosystems  Involved more than 1,360 scientists, economists, business professionals, and other experts from 95 countries  Its findings provide the first state-of-the- art scientific evaluation of the condition and trends in the world‘s ecosystems and the services they provide What is the MA? ©Millinieum Ecosystem Assessment ©TEEB

TEEB Training MA in Action ©TEEB

TEEB Training Group Exercise 1 1. Identify  an important biodiversity and ecosystem service based industry in your country (e.g. agriculture, forestry, mining/extractives)  the 3-5 most important ecosystem services that are affected by this industry  those ecosystem services values that are not well reflected in markets and those that are not  appropriate measures and indicators of status of these ecosystem services ©TEEB

TEEB Training  Review the MA list of ecosystem services - which ones have a significant international dimension? - Rank the top 3 in order of importance for attention from international policy-makers Group Exercise 2 ©UNEP/GRID-Arendal ©TEEB
