History of Mother’s Day

Ancient Times The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. Ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honour of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ.

Mothering Sunday In England, Mothering Sunday began as a day in Lent. It was also known as Simnel day when Simnel cakes ( a fruit cake with marzipan on top) were made. On this day people visited the biggest church in their area known as the “Mother Church” Young British maids and servants were only allowed one day to visit their family each year. This was usually on Mothering Sunday.

Modern Mother’s Day The celebration of “Mother’s Day” became law in America in 1914 after President Wilson issued a Mothers Day proclamation. Other countries quickly followed suit making it a day to remember and celebrate mothers.

Mother’s Day Around the world Mother’s day falls on different days and in different months, depending which part of the world you live in. We celebrate Mother’s day on the 2 nd Sunday in May along with America, India, NZ and many more In Norway, it falls on the second Sunday in February. In Hong Kong, Singapore and Mexico, Mother’s day is on May 10 th. In England Mothering Sunday is the 4th Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent – March 10 th this year. Mothers in Argentina will have to wait until the second Sunday of October for their well wishes. South Korea have a parenting day on May 8 th

Other’s Day There may be other’s in your life who care and look after you just like a mother. Grandmothers, Dads, Step-Mums or Dads, Foster mums, Aunts This day is a special day to thank them too.

Things you can do for Mother’s Day Give – Flowers, – Chocolates – Toiletries – Electrical goods – Cards Breakfast in Bed Have a Meal with mum Tidy your room Make something special Clean the house What will you do for that special person on Sunday?
