4 2.5 million CORNEAL BLINDNESS IN INDIA
+40,000 More cases added every year 2.5 million CORNEAL BLINDNESS IN INDIA

5 In India, there are approximately 10 million blind in both the eyes & 5 million blind in one eye, that makes one-third of the total blind population of the world.

6 14.9 out of every 1000 people in India are blind as compared to just 3 per 1000 in developed countries.

7 8800 KERATOPLASTY/YR Utilization=40% only

8 CAUSES OF CORNEAL BLINDNESS

9 Injuries Infections Chemical burns Corneal dysrophies/degeneration Malnutrition Post-operative complications or infections

10 WHO CAN DONATE

11 Any age & sex Those who wear spectacles Those who have had cataract surgery Diabetics and hypertensive Blind from retinal or optic nerve provided the cornea is clear

15 Cornea from patient with anterior segment surgery may be used if screened by specular microscopy and meet the eye bank’s endothelial standards.

21 PLEDGING Eye donation can happen irrespective of whether a person has pledged his/her eyes or not Pledging is for creating awareness and it acts as a reminder to do this job.

23 Nobody is charged for making eye donation
Nobody is charged for making eye donation. The only cost to encounter is one local telephone call.

24 Enucleation to be performed
Within 24 hrs of death if body is refrigerated Within 6 hrs of death if body is not refrigerated

25 Till corneal retreviation team arrives---
Place wet cotton with ice over the closed eye lids. It will keep the tissue moist. Raise Head with a pillow. Switch off the fans If possible, antibiotic eye drops may be periodically instilled in the eyes in order to reduce chances of infection

Eye jar and blood test tubes should be labelled with- Eye ( laterality) Time & date of death Time & date of enucleation Cause of death Name of enucleator

Subclavian artery or vein is the preferred site Femoral Artery or vein as last resort HIV HBsAg HCV

29 On reaching eye bank

30 Tissues are examined, processed and used for corneal transplant operation as early as possible. The needy patients are contacted in accordance with the waiting list.

31 Eyes are a precious gift to a person
Eyes are a precious gift to a person. But the same eyes bring misery when misused or when they are lost. A wise man utilizes that gift while alive and on death too
