Great Fast Period of fast, prayer, meditation that prepares s for the Holy Week and the Resurrection of Christ. It is named Lent because it imitates the forty- day fast that Christ had. It is also said Great in order to distinguish it from Christmas Fast. Holy Fast was established in the 4 th century. Initially, its duration was six weeks, while later one more week was added. Thus, nowadays Great Lent begins on Clean Monday and finishes on Holy Saturday. During Lent, on every Wednesday and Friday, is taken place in the church Proigiasmeni Sequence.
