Lets start by exploring what portrait painting is and what it looks like… Image: http://painter.whangarei.biz/

The word portrait means visual appearance of a person Painting means an artwork created using paint Image: http://www.ulike.net/Self-Portrait_(Artwork,277875)http://www.ulike.net/Self-Portrait_(Artwork,277875)

So then portrait painting means a painting of a person Images: http://www.artisticrealism.com/artstudio/category/finished-paintings What things can we see about this person? What is he wearing? What does he look like?

Images: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VanGogh_1887_Selbstbildnis.jpg http://paintingsgalleries.blogspot.com/2009/01/portrait-painting-from-pencil-drawing.html http://www.stevegreaves.com/asian_boy.htm http://fineartamerica.com/featured/lisa-peter-jean-caley.html Portrait painting often includes the shoulders and sometimes the hands but always includes the face. This is because the face can show us a lot about how the person is feeling or what they might be thinking… How might these people be feeling? What could they be thinking about?

Portrait painting can also include animals and pets not just people Image: http://www.pet-portraitartist.comoils-largerpet-portrait-painting.htm http://www.pet-portrait-painter.com/prices.htm www.dailypainters.com/paintings/64648/Arabian-Horse-Oil-Portrait-Painting- Equine-Animal-Art http://fineartamerica.com/art/paintings/wild+animal+portrait/all?page=2 Which of these might be pets?

Portrait paintings can look very different to one another. How is each one of these different to one another?

Portrait painting suggests that we only use paint... Image: http://www.paintingsilove.com/artist/angelawillemse But there are many different ways of showing portraits of people, animals and pets.

Image:http://fineartdrawing.com/samples/pencil.htmhttp://fineartdrawing.com/samples/pencil.htm You can use pencil to create a portrait drawing

Image: http://www.pencilportraitdrawing.com/charcoal-portrait.htmhttp://www.pencilportraitdrawing.com/charcoal-portrait.htm You can also use charcoal for portrait drawing

Image: http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/black-and-white-portrait-photography-tips/http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/black-and-white-portrait-photography-tips/ You can use a camera to create portrait photography

Image: http://www.wiredandfired.co.uk/index.aspx?wsid=45038&sectionid=740216 A portrait can be created through sculpture… This one is made from bronze material.

Image: http://www.bronze-busts.com/bronze_busts_working_methods.html This portrait sculpture is made from wax

Image: http://grandcentralacademy.blogspot.com/2009/01/president-obama.html And this one is made from clay Does anyone know who this man is? Very good, yes this is Barrack Obama the president of the United States of America.

So portrait painting can be connected to all of these things Let’s reflect on what we have learnt so far…

Image: http://grandcentralacademy.blogspot.com/2009/01/president-obama.html So what have we learnt so far? 19 Image: http://grandcentralacademy.blogspot.com/2009/01/president-obama.html So what have we learnt so far? We can create portraits using.. Pencil Charcoal A camera - Photography Clay Wax
