GOAL SETTING

Why is Goal Setting Important? Why is Goal Setting Important?

Types of Goals: Long Term Goals: These are more general goals that you would like to achieve over a long period of time. They provide a direction for what you are doing and something to focus toward. They consist of many short term goals. Short Term Goals: These are more specific goals that you would achieve over a short period of time. They keep you on track toward your long term goal.

Performance Goals If you want to succeed, you can't base your sports performance goals on the results of your event. You need to set your goals based on your performance and only your performance. For example:  “I want to come third in the Mount Mission competition”- How do we turn this into a performance goal??

S.M.A.R.T Goal Setting S M A R T Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time-Frame

Focus on a particular part of an activity E.g. Passing to the left in Rugby, Shooting in Netball How can we measure it to see if success has occurred? E.g. Passes out of 10, Shots made in 2 minutes Are you going to be able to achieve it based on previous results? Do you have the time, equipment, resources to make improvements? A time the goal is to be completed by E.g. Previous best 2/10 – 4/10 not 2/10 to 10/10 E.g. Complete the goal by 21/07/2011 E.g. I have a netball and a hoop to practice shooting

TASK: 1. As a group decide who is going to complete which leg of the Mount Mission Event (Legs 1,2 and 3). Think about your 400m pre-test pool time, and your running ability. 2.Now as a group set yourself a Long Term Goal for the Mount Mission event. 3.Follow the S.M.A.R.T goal setting method to break the goal down and make three Short Term Goals in order to achieve it.

TASK: 4. Now as an individual set yourself a Long Term Goal for your own leg of the event. If you are doing Leg 1 or 3 this goal should be about Swimming. If you are doing Leg 2, this should be about Running. 5. Follow the S.M.A.R.T goal setting method to break the goal down and make three Short Term Goals in order to achieve it.

Barriers Barriers are factors that stop us from being able to reach our goals. These can come in the form of physical barriers such as Clothing or Weather; or can be emotional barriers such as lack of motivation.

Brainstorm - Barriers Barriers to completing our goal (Swimming, Running) How can we overcome each one??

Enablers Enablers are factors which help us to reach our goals. Again these can be physical enablers such as music or emotional enablers such as getting enough sleep.

Brainstorm - Enablers Enablers to help you achieve your goal. (Think swimming, running, training) Why is each one an enabler??

Monitoring your Progress Monitoring progress toward your goals is very valuable on the road to success. It allows us to check that we are on the right track and make corrections before it is too late. It also helps remind us of the purpose for the training to keep us focused. WHAT COULD WE MONITOR???

NOW WE NEED TO SET A TRAINING PROGRAMME!!!
