4 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, 13 and he was in the desert for forty days, being tempted by Satan. Wild animals and angels attended him. The Spirit is the active power here: - the real battle of the gospel is between invisible, spiritual forces, not just human opponents. The importance of the temptation for Jesus: What do we learn about Jesus’ authority and power from this story? How might this event have prepared Jesus for his ministry? The importance of this scene for Christians: How might this story have given 1 st Century Christians in Rome hope? How does this story give Christians strength when they fast during Lent?

9 Importance of Temptations for Jesus He was now ready to start his ministry, knowing he had triumphed over the temptations of evil: – reinforcing status as Son of God, who alone can defeat evil – Confirming his authority and power to cast out Satan wherever he goes. Importance of Temptations for Christians Who is Jesus: Proof of unique status of Jesus as Son of God, capable of defeating evil. Hope & Encouragement: for persecuted Christians - knowing that Jesus is Son of God and has authority over evil. Also that his teaching is true teaching from God, not infected by evil. Part of following Jesus: in Lent, Christians pray and fast to defeat evil in their own lives, with God’s help, as disciples of Jesus. 1.Why was triumphing over the devil important for Jesus? 2 reasons. 2.Why is it important for Christians that he triumphed? 2 reasons. **Why do people fast for Lent? Which of the reasons do they do it for?

11 60 seconds You have just 60 seconds to write a summary of what we have learnt today. The most detailed answer will win a sweetie. DO NOT JUST WRITE: “I have learnt about Jesus’ temptation and what it means to Christians...”
