USING QUOTES UNIT 3 AOS1

REMEMBER YOUR QUOTE FROM YESTERDAY? WRITE IN UP ON THE BOARD!

INTERGRATING QUOTES INTO YOUR WRITING You will be in part assessed on your ability to take evidence from the text Ideally, you will have around twenty quotes memorised (or at least roughly memorised) These quotes should be from all five sections of the books This will give a you the flexibility to deal with a variety of essay questions

EXAMPLE AN EXAMPLE FROM PART I QUOTE ‘Patroclus was to be his adoptive brother, and the world, for Achilles, reassembled itself around a new centre… It was as if he all along needed this other before he could become fully himself’ p.13 - 14 MMM… A good quote for anything around heroism, story telling, grief and loss and generally any questions! INTEGRATION Achilles’ rage is deeply fuelled by the grief of losing Patroclus. Upon being delivered to Peleus he ‘was to be his adoptive bother’, and his Achilles’ world ‘reassembled itself around a new centre.’ Futhermore, Malouf explains how Achilles’ needed ‘this other before he could become fully himself’. Seen in this light, Achilles rage, however brutal and fearsome, was explicable.

EXAMPLE AN EXAMPLE FROM PART II QUOTE ‘To take on the lighter bond of being simply a man. Perhaps that is the real gift I have to bring him. Perhaps that is the Ransom’ p.60 MMM… A good quote for anything really INTEGRATION The gold that Priam and Somax carried to the Myrmidon’s camp alone would have been an insufficient Ransom, as Priam knows. He same value in taking on the lighter bond ‘of being simply a man’. Facing Achilles as a man and father, he felt was ‘the real gift I have to bring to him’. The gold was merely a token, and something far deeper and more valuable was really the Ransom.

EXAMPLE AN EXAMPLE FROM PART III QUOTE ‘The truth was that none of his sons was in that sense particular. Their relationship to him was formal and symbolic, part of that dreamlike play before the gods MMM… A discussion about the influence of Somax on Priam INTEGRATION Somax exposes to Priam what is it like to have a strong father relationship with his sons. Through his interaction with Somax, Priam realises that ‘none of his sons was in that sense particular to him’. He begins to realise that he had not lived the grief Somax had as his sons ‘relationship to him was formal and symbolic’.

EXAMPLE AN EXAMPLE FROM PART IV QUOTE ‘But the women’s presence is stronger than his own. This is their world. So long as he stands here watching they will not begin’ p.193 MMM… A good quote for any gender related essay topic INTEGRATION Malouf reminds us that even in times of war, even Achilles can be over- powered by the role of women. He wishes, but is unable to see, Hector’s body being washed and anointed before it is returned to Priam. However, ‘they will not begin this process’ as ‘the women’s presence is stronger than his own’. This important social positions is occupied by women: ‘This is their world’.

EXAMPLE AN EXAMPLE FROM PART V QUOTE ‘But he has done something for which he will be remembered for as long as such stories are told. He has stepped into a space that till now was uninhabited and found a way to fill it’. MMM… Anything exploring the role of heroism, the success of characters or the changes they experienced INTEGRATION Priam’s success on his journey is only a side story: Malouf does not seek to alter the Homer’s epic poem. He instead adds substance to the role played by Priam, positioning as some who ‘has done something for which he will be remembered for as long as such stories are told’. His death and the downfall of Troy remains.
