Francis Scott Key and the National Anthem By: Jenna and Amanda Francis Scott Key was a lawyer and poet. He wrote the National Anthem, which is a song showing loyalty and patriotism for the United States.

History Francis wrote it during the attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The flag that was still standing inspired him so much he wrote the original poem on the back of a letter he had in his pocket

Francis Scott Key Francis Scott Key was born in Fredrick County, Maryland on August 1, 1779. He was an attorney for the District of Columbia from 1833 through 1841. A fort was built in his honor and is now a national monument.

National Anthem There are four verses in the song, but only the first is sung. It was originally a poem, but to make it into a song, the tune “Anacreon in Heaven” was borrowed. It’s a great achievement and honor to have an anthem for the United States of America.

Accomplishment It’s a great achievement and privilege to have a National Anthem. All people should be proud of this achievement. Francis Scott Key was a great lawyer with a dream. He loved his job as a lawyer all over the U.S. and had a great passion for poetry. We are very proud of this song and poet.
