Catalyst Get a calculator and have paper out for notes! 1. Calculate the molar mass of CaCl 2 2. Convert 54g of CaCl 2 to moles of CaCl 2. 3. How many grams of CaCl 2 do you have if you have 3 moles of CaCl 2 ?

Today’s Agenda 5 min Catalyst 25 min Moles to Moles 20 min Practice 5 min Exit Slip

BIG GOAL!  Stoichiometry is a lot of little pieces  Important to keep big picture in mind

The Mole to Mole Ratio!  Today we’re tackling the middle piece – which means we need to learn a new conversion factor!  Remember what a mole is?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R7NiIum2TI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R7NiIum2TI Moles Substance A Moles Substance B Grams Substance A Grams Substance B Molar Mass Mole Ratio Molar Mass

Coefficients  Coefficients indicate the number of moles of a compound.  So when I see 3 CO 2, that means I have three moles of CO 2. If I see just H 2 O, remember that I assume the number one if there is no coefficient.

The mole to mole ratio is used to go from moles of one substance (A) to moles of another (B). A mole to mole ratio is the ratio of the moles of one reactant or product to the moles of another reactant or product in a balanced equation. Mole Ratio Moles Substance A Moles Substance B Grams Substance A Grams Substance B Molar Mass Molar Mass

Mole to Mole Ratio Example 2 graham crackers + 1 marshmallow + 4 bars of chocolate  1 s’more The coefficients represent the number of moles.

 To write a mole to mole ratio, set the number of moles of the first compound equal to the number of moles of the second compound.  “What is the mole to mole ratio of graham crackers to s’mores?” 2 graham crackers = 1 s’more 2 graham crackers + 1 marshmallow + 4 bars of chocolate  1 s’more

GUIDED PRACTICE! 2 KClO 3  2 KCl + 3 O 2  According to this equation, what is the mole to mole ratio of KClO 3 to O 2 ?  According to this equation, what is the mole to mole ratio of KCl to O 2 ?  According to this equation, what is the mole to mole ratio of KClO 3 to KCl?

EXAMPLE 2 KClO 3  2 KCl + 3 O 2 1. How many moles of KCl can you get if you have 5 moles of KClO 3 ? 2. How many moles of O 2 would be produced with 15 moles of KClO 3 ?  What are we given? What do we want? What is the conversion factor?  Set up your t-chart to work it out!

Mole to Mole Practice Mg + O 2  2MgO 1. According to this equation, what is the mole to mole ratio of Mg to MgO? 2. According to this equation, what is the mole to mole ratio of O 2 to MgO? 3. How many moles of Mg would you need to form 10 moles of MgO? 4. How many moles of O 2 are needed to combine with 40 moles of Mg? 5. How many moles of MgO could be created with 30 moles of Mg?

CH 4 + 2 O 2  CO 2 + 2 H 2 O 1. How many moles of CH 4 would you need to form 12 moles of H 2 O? 2. How many moles of O 2 are needed to combine with 16 moles of CH 4 ?
