WHAT IS BULLYING? Unwanted, aggressive behavior Includes such actions as: Teasing Making threats Spreading rumors Attacking people physically and verbally Exclusion

TYPES OF BULLYING There are three main types of bullying Verbal bullying Social bullying Physical bullying

VERBAL BULLYING Saying or writing mean things Verbal bullying includes: Teasing Name calling Inappropriate sexual comments Taunting Threatening to cause harm

SOCIAL BULLYING Hurting someone’s reputation or relationships Social bullying includes: Leaving someone out on purpose Telling other children not to be friends with someone Spreading rumors about someone Embarrassing someone in public

PHYSICAL BULLYING Hurting a person’s body or possessions Physical bullying includes: Hitting/kicking/pinching Spitting Tripping/pushing Taking or breaking someone’s things Making rude or mean hand gestures

Remember, those who bully others do not need to be stronger or bigger than those they bully.

ROLES IN BULLYING Bullying situations often more complex than they seem 3 roles in bullying are: Victim Bully Bystander

THE VICTIM Has characteristics of: Low self-esteem Anxiety Limited sense of humor Depression Lack of social skills Low popularity Below average size, strength, or coordination

THE BULLY Rely on: Direct verbal bullying Physical power to control Threats Physical force Group bullying

BYSTANDER There are two types of bystander: Hurtful bystander Instigate Encourage Join in Helpful bystander Directly intervene Get help

ADVICE! Do NOT respond to the bully No fighting back No Bullying back Walk Use buddy system Hold in your anger Act brave and walk away Tell an adult Talk about it
