4 IT is getting boxed-in by power & cooling ●Rack density has doubled every 8 years since 1992 ●Moore’s Law drives increased MIPs ●Power density increasing 15% per year ●By 2010, average kW per rack forecast to be 20+ kW (up from 1 kW in 2000) ●Dense power makes cooling unpredictable and expensive Power density is exploding Source: IDC Report: Aligning IT with Business Moore’s Law is now being limited by infrastructure!

5 Key points on energy usage in data centers ●More than 50% of power going into a typical data center goes to the power and cooling systems – NOT to the IT loads ●The typical 1MW (IT load) data center is continuously wasting about 400kW or 2,000 tons of coal per year due to poor design (DCiE = 50%, instead of best-practice 70%) ●Every kW saved in a data center saves about $1,000 per year ●Every kW saved in a data center reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 5 tons per year ●Every kW saved in a data center has a carbon reduction equivalent to eliminating about 1 car from the road ●A 1% improvement in data center infrastructure efficiency (DCiE) corresponds to approximately 2% reduction in electrical bills 66 White paper

6 How that translates into savings "A small-to-average-sized 1MW US data center that uses management software to reduce energy consumption by 10% will save $87,600 per year, or $438,000 over five years (not including equipment and software investment). A European datacenter may save $650,000 over five years (because of higher electricity prices)."
