What to wear / what to bring? comfortable clothes (layers) + extra dry ball cap / sunglasses boat shoes (sandals NOT recommended) PFD for all crew sunscreen bottle of water / snack whistle weather knowledge (radio or weather page from newspaper) ditty bag Materials: Method: Talk about the importance of bringing appropriate gear and wearing appropriate clothing. Pass around ditty bag to students allowing them to introduce themselves and pull something from the ditty bag. Discuss purpose and importance of each piece of gear pulled.

Parts of a Sailboat Small sailboat Sailboat daggerboard or centerboard, rudder-tiller assembly Sails Running Rigging Materials: (actual or diagrams illustrating them) Method: Introduce parts of a sailboat by asking students to hold a part of the boat, or to pick up an one of the items (sail bag, lines, fins, etc) arranged near the boat. Allow each student to present their part, helping them with the name and purpose of each. Demonstrate how to attach or rig each part.

Leaving a Dock Always from leeward side of dock when possible Consider wind direction and current Push bow away from wind after casting off Head in direction that gives best opportunity to get away from shoreline (shallow water)

Returning to a Dock Always to leeward side of dock when possible Always Plan an Escape Route Sail to within two boat lengths and then luff up Glide to dock with all sails luffing If coming in too fast back mainsail to slow down
