WARMUP What do you think about funding research for alternative sources of diesel? Where should we start and how much time/ money should we put into it?
2
REMINDER Quiz next class ◦ Study notes, homework, review sheet
3
What is Diesel? The primary oil used in motor vehicles
4
What is biodiesel? Type of diesel developed from vegetable oil! ◦ Can also be made from fats and greases
5
Benefits Renewable Only takes crops a year to grow Give off less pollution when burned Reduction in land destruction Safer to handle Nontoxic
6
Negatives Lower fuel efficiency Does not do well in cold weather Takes a lot of oil to produce necessary amount Take more time to process and transport
7
Currently Biodiesel is the fastest growing alternative fuel source!!
8
What You Will Be Doing Today Making your own biodiesel!!!

LAB REPORT Follow rubric on my wiki!!!!! Pick reliable individuals to work with. ◦ If you choose to do an entire lab report on your own you need to let me know. ◦ The lab report can also be turned in before the due date for me to edit ◦ LAB REPORT DUE-> 04/26/2013

Lab Questions Questions: 1. What changes did you see between the characteristics of the starting materials (cooking oil, methanol, and potassium hydroxide solution) and the final products (biodiesel and glycerol)? What evidence is there that a chemical reaction has occurred? 3. What is the purpose of ‘washing’ the biodiesel mixture with salt water? 7. Is biodiesel really green? Explain at least two arguments in support of the idea that biodiesel is a “greener” fuel. Also present one argument that biodiesel is not a “greener” fuel. Reference your lab data when appropriate.
