What is water pollution? Water pollution can be defined in many ways: One or more substances that cause problems for animals or people. One or more substances that cause problems for animals or people. Aquatic areas can naturally remove a certain amount of pollution by dispersing it harmlessly. How do we know when water is polluted? The main way is to take samples of water and measure the concentrations of different chemicals that it contains. If the chemicals are dangerous or the concentrations are too great, we can regard the water as polluted. Measurements like this are known as chemical indicators of water quality.

Our activity We collected samples of sea water from two areas in Attica, one residential (Loutropyrgos) and one industrial (Aspropyrgos ) and we analyzed them to see their content in inorganic salts, chlorophyll, suspended matter, nitrites (NO - ) and dissolved oxygen. Pollution effects Pollution effects Pollution that is caused by sewage and agricultural outflow could lead to eutrophication, which is the exponential increase of phytoplankton. In certain areas this phenomenon leads to the development of “dead zones” where the oxygen which originates from the sea falls to such low levels that it can not support life.
