The simple past tense expresses a completed action or describes a situation in the past. When do we use the simple past? - When the event is in the past. - When the event is completely finished. What is the simple past?

How do we conjugate the simple past? Regular verbs. - With regular verbs, simply add -ed. AffirmativeNegativeInterrogative I talkedI did not talkDid I talk? You talkedYou did not talkDid you talk? 1- General rule Simply add –ed to the base form of the verb. Examples:answer / answeredshow / showed visit / visitedfill / filled 2- Verbs ending in -y When the –y is preceded by a vowel, apply the general rule. Examples: play / playedenjoy / enjoyed stay/ stayedpray/ prayed

When the –y is preceded by a consonant, change the –y for an –i and add -ed. Examples: carry / carriedcry / cried try/ triedstudy/ studied 3- Doubled consonant With verbs of one or two syllables that end by a consonant + a vowel + a consonant, double the last consonant and add –ed. Examples: drop / droppedstop / stopped tap/ tappedrub / rubbed
