Sports extend as far back as the existence of man. The earliest forms of sports were commonly used as preparation for training for war or hunting. Now sports are used for recreation and fun. However, these fun games can come at a price. There have been many injuries caused by sport. I’ll discuss some of these common sport-related injuries that are very prevalent in sports today.

Muscle Strains Knee Injuries: ACL Sprains/Tears Shoulder Injuries: Rotator Cuff Strains/Tears

Commonly referred to as “pulled muscles” Injuries that affect muscle fibers or tendons I think I pulled my lower back!

Occurs when a muscle is: Stretched too far Overused Fatigued Improper lifting techniques Improper lifting

Muscle strain injuries are graded by severity: Grade I: Mild discomfort, often no disability. Grade II: Moderate discomfort, can/may limit ability to perform Grade III: Severe injury, muscle tearing, swelling, and significant bruising occur.

Strength and condition the body: Stronger muscles are less likely to sustain injuries Gain flexibility: Lack of flexibility increases risk of injury Properly warm-up before sporting event “Cold” muscles lead to greater chance of injury Good thing I did yoga as a kid

The ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament One of four ligaments involved in knee stability Role is to prevent tibia from sliding forward Studies show females injure the ACL more frequently

More flexible, causing less stability Less muscle to hold knee in place Wider pelvises, larger “Q angles” Angle measured where femur meets tibia

Sudden change of direction Most are non-contact injuries Force to front of the knee Improper training habits

Planting and cutting Football player making fast cut Straight-knee landing Basketball player coming down after jump shot Pivoting and sudden deceleration Soccer player quickly slowing down followed by quick turn

Develop body awareness, strength and balance Train stability of knees and ankles Strengthen hips and thighs Proper warm-ups and stretching Plyometrics and Agility drills Improves neuromuscular system and muscle reactions

Group of four muscles/tendons that surrounds shoulder joint Supraspinatus: abducts shoulder joint Infraspinatus: externally rotates shoulder joint Teres Minor: externally rotates shoulder joint Subscapularis: depresses head of humerus

Caused by irritation/damage to tendons/muscles by Repetitive Stress Poor posture Falling Lifting or pulling My shoulder hurts from throwing so much!!!

Majority of injuries require only physical therapy Program designed to improve flexibility and strength Other injury treatments include: Cortisone Injections Surgery Arthroscopic surgery

Daily stretching Strengthening exercises Rest if used frequently Cold and heat packs if experiencing pain/inflammation Stretching is key!!!
