2 Context “The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is a … medical school for the whole of Northern Ontario, “the School is a joint initiative of Lakehead University and Laurentian University with main campuses in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, and multiple teaching and research sites distributed across Northern Ontario.” www.nosm.cawww.nosm.ca (about us, community profiles)

3 Research Objectives & Approach Overall Objective: Short-term and demonstrable social and economic impacts that have occurred since the inception of NOSM  Lakehead and Laurentian Universities  Health care facilities (e.g., Hospitals)  Northern Ontario communities  Examine economic contribution of NOSM using a Local Economic Impact Model 57 key informant interviews 2 focus groups (9 participants)

10 Employment Contribution 233 full time equivalent positions total contribution estimated at 420- 510 FTE positions NOSM also pays stipends or honoraria to committee members, Aboriginal elders and to more than 670 preceptors in over 70 Northern Ontario communities.

11 Conclusion: Total Economic Contributions In 2007-2008 $67-82M 420-510 FTE jobs
