3 Childhood Shapes Adulthood How a child is taught, guided, provided for, loved, talked to, and treated teaches them how to act. A child can choose to follow these ways and act this way or they can break the cycle and take a different path. What we do to a child can impact them and the society forever.

4 Class Activity Hand out scrambled sentences. Your job is to unscramble them. Please split into 8 groups and get to work!

5 A Child’s Bill of Rights The right to… 1.Loving and secure human relationships 2.Proper nutrition, healthful and safe living conditions, and appropriate physical and psychological care 3.Be taught essential living skills 4.Non-abusive discipline

6 A Child’s Bill of Rights The right to… 5.Learn basic values and moral behavior 6.Be an independent and unique individual 7.Protected from people, parents included, who may physically or mentally harm them. 8.Develop individual talents.

7 Parenting Responsibilities Parents are legally responsible to provide for a child’s needs. In a parent-child relationship, the parent does the giving and the child does the receiving. Parents should learn all they can about how children grow and develop.

8 Is Parenting For Me? Let’s read a few situations and decide if parenting is right for these couples. Ask yourself the following questions: – Why should this couple have a baby? – Why should this couple not have a baby? – What decision do you think the couple should make? – What reasons do you have for making this decision?

9 Becoming a Parent – Emotional – Financial – Social – Physical – Biological – Educational – Stable and healthy relationships What should a person consider before determining their readiness for parenthood?

10 Becoming a Parent Emotionally mature enough to put their own needs secondary to the child’s needs. Physically mature and healthy – Optimal age for childbearing is 20-35 It is essential that parents share responsibilities for meeting their children’s needs.

15 Summary There are many responsibilities related to caring for children. Many times we see only the fun and positive moments adults spend with children. There are also teaching moments that are very difficult. It is vital to learn how to handle the more difficult aspects of dealing with children, as well as learning how to positively reinforce them.

16 Assignment Interview a parent about the roles and responsibilities of parenthood. Due in one week from today.
