Faults When rocks break, they move along surfaces called faults It takes a tremendous amount of force to overcome the strength of rocks and to cause movement along these faults

What causes faults? The Earth is in constant motion Stress on rocks near plate edges The vibrations of breaking rock causes earthquakes

Types of Faults Normal Reverse Strike -Slip

Normal Faults Rock above the fault surface moves downward in relation to rock below the fault surface

Reverse Faults When rock breaks from forces pushing from opposite directions, the rock above is forced up and over the fault line

Strike-Slip Faults Rocks on either side of the fault are moving past each other without upward or downward movement
