On your Thinking Paper…. ► Explain what it means to be an outsider. ► Timed writing- write the entire time….. Think about a time you felt like an outsider. Describe what happened.

► The purpose of the title The Outsiders is to: A. Tell you about the author B. Tell you about the setting C. Get you thinking about the possible conflict D. Tell you about the author’s purpose for writing.

The Outsiders ► The Outsiders describes the conflict between two groups of teenagers, the greasers and the socials (Socs- not socks). ► Name some groups we have here at Westridge.

Themes in The Outsiders Write these down on your thinking paper... ► Conflicts arise from misunderstandings of attitudes and values. ► Understanding & kindness can overcome prejudice. ► People are not usually satisfied with what they have. ► Loyalty is a necessary quality in human relationships. ► Everyone has problems.

The novel…. ► Write your first and last name inside the book. Add - “Larvie” after your name. ► Record the book’s number on the class roster. ► Bring your copy of the novel to class every day. ► **The movie will be a reward for reading the novel and doing the work.
