16 A Region That Relies on the Rivers
Historically seasons of uncontrolled flooding and drought in the Region Maintain 1,175 navigable river miles 10.5 percent of the total river miles within the USACE 73 million tons of commodities in Operate and maintain 14 navigation lock projects 9 on the Tennessee River 4 on the Cumberland River 1 on the Clinch River Wilson Lock, AL is highest single lift East of the Rocky Mountains at 100 feet 47,000 lockages in 2010 Key Messages: - The Cumberland River has been an important asset to the region since the founding of Nashville and continues to be. The Corps of Engineers has built the dams on Cumberland that now manage the river and provide for navigation, flood damage reduction, hydropower, water quality and recreation.

20 Emergency Management Provide rapid support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), USACE, State Assigned a Roofing Planning and Response Team (PRT), trained and ready to deploy to execute the pre-scripted missions assigned by FEMA; the team’s last deployment was during Hurricane Katrina. Liaison w/ TEMA Continuous interface – lead for Memphis District Maintain an excellent working relationship Liaison w/ KYEM (projects on Kentucky side) Provide highly-trained liaisons during disasters 24/7 rotation (if necessary)

26 Externship Program Duration – 3 days in field-2 days completing curriculum Purpose: Provide teachers a real-world business experience to develop project-based curriculum that will provide students with industry exposure and applied learning. Can be team of teachers, or single teacher HUB Goal: Final product, lesson plan, shared with other HUB teachers District provide with scope of opportunities, HUB collects resumes, District selects participants HUB provides stipends for teachers; we provide site and expertise
