Understanding School Types Four-Year University Provides associate, bachelor’s and graduate degrees Offers a well-rounded education and flexible degrees Community College Offers associate degrees Typically provides pre-requisite courses that can transfer to a four-year institution Technical Branch Provides education and training in technical fields Offers bachelor’s and associate degrees

Understanding School Types Technology Center Offers certificates in several different fields of study Helps students prepare for college and careers Proprietary School Prepares students for a specific occupation Privately-owned institution Private School Offers education in various fields Tuition and fees tend to be higher than at public universities

Location, Location, Location -Located in large, metro areas -Offer entertainment, museums, shopping and events -Have more opportunity for local job placement and internships -Typically attract culturally diverse students -Usually located in towns where the school’s revenue helps drive the local economy -Have amenities located nearby, i.e. laundromat, supermarket, bank -Offer more on-campus events -May have local connections to help students with job placement -Typically offer more on-campus housing and entertainment -Located in smaller towns that can serve a widespread area -Usually have a larger population of student commuters -Offer more personalized assistance from professors

Check Them Out Visit every college you’re strongly considering Take a campus tour Schedule interviews with several campus officials, including professors in your field of study, admissions, financial aid, housing Grab any necessary paperwork or forms Visit dorms or on-campus apartments Talk with current students about campus life Explore the local area on your own
