1o Steps to Drawing Medication into a Syringe

Step #1 O Remove the safety cap from the syringe.

Step #2 O Pull back the plunger on the syringe to the mark equal to the amount of medication you need to draw up.

Step #3 O Insert the syringe needle into the rubber center on the top of the medication bottle.

Step #4 O Turn the bottle upside down.

Step #5 O Pull back the plunger to the mark at the prescribed amount of medication.

Step #6 O Remove the needle from the bottle and inspect the medication in the syringe for air bubbles.

Step #7 O Flick the syringe to move bubbles to the top.

Step #8 O Push the plunger to remove the air bubbles.

Step #9 O Draw more medication if needed.

Step #10 O Give the injection as ordered and recap the needle.

SAFETY TIPS!!! O Pay attention! O No horseplay! O When taking the cap off of the needle face it away from you. O Always put the cap on the needle when not in use. O DO NOT BEND THE NEEDLE!

LET’S PRACTICE!!! O Your dog “Fido” gets a shot of Dexamethazone once a month for inflammation. The medication label has the following recommendations: O 0.5ml for every 5 pounds. O Fido weighs 20lbs. O How much medication should Fido receive each shot? O Draw up the correct amount of medication in your syringe. When you have finished raise your hand. 20 divided by 5 = 4, and 4 times 0.5 = 2ml
