2 Who Is a Citizen? The Constitution says a person by birth or choice owes allegiance to this nation. You are a citizen if : Were born in the U.S. or its territories One of your parents is a citizen If you have been naturalized If your parents were naturalized before you were 18 years of age

3 Naturalization Most naturalized people were aliens Process of becoming a citizen – Application – Examination – Final Hearing

4 Naturalized Citizens Have the same rights and duties of other citizens – Cannot be president or vice president – Cant loose citizenship Unless they try to overthrow the government

5 The Office of Citizens Each citizen has authority - office of citizen – Citizens have the power – Our government is “Of the people, for the people, and by the people” – We the citizens decide what the government does Impossible for all of us to be in the government – We elect representatives – They make decisions and pass laws Reps hold office for as long as we allow them to – If we don’t like what they're doing we can vote them out of office – The office of citizens is for life
