Do’s and Don’ts of Listening (Barriers of Listening) DO’S 0 Give the person your full attention. 0 Tell that person that you care and are glad that s/he is talking with you. 0 Share your concern for the person’s safety. 0 Help the person feel more safe and in control. 0 Encourage the person to talk about her/his feeling. 0 Validate the person’s feelings. 0 Repeat back in your own worked what you heard the person say. 0 Ask helpful questions DON’TS 0 Do not interrupt. 0 Do not judge before you finish listening. 0 Do not say the person’s feelings or actions are unimportant, overreacting or wrong. 0 Do not tell the person what to do. 0 Do not try to solve the person’s problems. 0 Do not provoke guilt about how the person’s family and friends might feel. 0 Do not offer false hope.
