3 20 Facts about Greece Greece is located in Europe Greece’s national name is Elliniki Dimorkatia Athens is the capital of Greece Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece The languages that are spoken in Greece are Greek and English The currency used in Greece is Euros The important holidays celebrated are: Greek Orthodox Easter, Christmas, Saints days throughout the year and Greek Independence Day (March 25th) Traditional food and drink are: Lamb, Olives, Cheese, Ouzo, Wine The Ottoman Empire took over Greece in 1453 Greece got it’s independence in 1824 from the Ottoman Empire The cross on the Greek flag symbolizes Greek orthodoxy

5 Eleftherios Venizelos Eleftherios was born on 1864 in Crete.He went to the university of Athens for college and studied law.Once he was out of school he helped draft the constitution for Greece and became a member of the government by Prince George. After Eleftherios moved from Crete to Athens, he became Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party. As the leader, he formed many alliances with Greece’s northern bordering states so they would not form a war. In1916, Eleftherios established a rival provisional government in Thessaloniki. This would influence politics for decades. In 1935, Eleftherios was forced to leave and live in France. Eleftherios died a year later of old age.
